At about nine or ten years old, my father taught me how to hand wash my clothes. He was a medical assistant at Gulu Main Hospital and was gone to work most of the weekdays and the only day we had was Saturday. Early in the morning, he would see to his patients who came home with different things including live chicken to pay him for his services. Sometimes, he would call me to untie the chicken legs and that was his way of saying, the chicken was mine. My mother would help me raise them – my only role was to make sure nobody slaughtered them when I didn’t want them to.

By the time my father finished with his patients, I would have fetched water from the well, just a one kilometre from our home, into buckets and basins. Put omo in one large basin and soaked his white shirts.

I remember, as young girls, we used to pride ourselves into carry twenty litres of water. How we shook our growing butts while walking without holding onto the jerricans. Fetching water was fun, it was time connect after school with the girls who lived closed by.

When he was done with his patients and heaps of clothes waiting under the mango tree, we started the washing process. First his white shirts – my father was the only man I saw who wore white shirts in dusty Alokolum. Just a little walk and your feet will be caked in red dust. Up to now, when I visit home, I pick out my dark clothes and a little worn out, so I don’t care to give them out before I return or bother to wash out the dust from them. I still wonder why my father wore white shirts and still had to ride a bicycle eight kilometres to work and later back home – while wearing a white shirt.

After the white shirts, we move to grey and wash and wash until the black clothes are washed and hang on the wire. I still wash my clothes the same way, if I must wash. These days, I employ other women to wash for me, and this means sometimes, some of my clothes may get stained or something happens to them, but I have also learned that I should not let someone else wash my expensive clothes and ruin them before I have ‘worn the money out of them’.

I enjoyed those moments with my father, mainly because I wanted to be close to him. We talked about school and relatives. He was very keen on education. I never missed school unless I was dying. When I got sick, my father would want me to get back to class as soon as possible, while my mother wanted me to stay home a little longer.

My father didn’t have to wash for himself or that I should have helped him. His wife, my mother could have washed for him, but I learned much later in life that my father wasn’t like most men. He was a man who wanted to do whatever he wanted to do.

Our living room at home was where he saw his patients, he took over the responsibility of making sure that it stayed clean. He mopped and cleaned something I haven’t seen or see most men do.

Washing for Boyfriends

In my early twenties at Makerere university, away from home. I expected my boyfriend to wash with me, just like my father did. I didn’t realise how naïve I was. I still expect my partner to help but I know that it’s my responsibility to keep his clothes because anyone who sees a stain or a crease on his clothes will blame me. The wife should have done better.

I still believe that our men should help their wives on partners in cleaning the clothes after all, they wear them and know which part of their clothes get dirty the most and what they did to get them that dirty.

As a young lady, (I think I am) I noticed that it became my duty to wash my boyfriend’s clothes as he was busy reading his books or if I didn’t help, there was a woman – ladies who washed for university students- ready to wash for him. There is always a woman willing to take up the responsibility either for money or anything.

There were stories of boys who found girl friends to make sure that their chores were done, while the boys passed their exams, the girls had re-takes. This may be any girls story now at university or they survived washing for their boyfriends as there is a pandemic and education sector has been closed for more than two years – nothing much has changed.

Other women experiences with washing

Over the years, I have interacted with different women who unlike what we think are not exactly excited to run off and be in dreamy washing land. I didn’t think much about washing of clothes. It seemed like something we must do since we need clean clothes till my kindred friend, barbara caveng introduced me to the topic after she visited Uganda in June 2021. The more I research about washing and the more I spoke to women who washed on daily basis, the more I realized that there is a lot of things that women were going through.

Many women feel that they need help from their male partners who now saw that washing was a responsibility of women. They left it completely in their hands of their women, including the negative criticism. In instances when a man drunk himself silly and wet himself or pooed on his clothes, I have heard even women say, “I pity his wife who will have to wash for him.” No matter how a man dirties himself, there is a woman somewhere who will wash for him.

I decided from an early age that I will take care of my man’s sanitation, but his underwear is not my responsibility. I like to keep some things out of my imagination. I think I have a morbid imagination and some things I just don’t want to think about like how much garlic you ate or how you ate a mango with a knife and the fiber isn’t easy to clean.

Its never an easy conversation but eventually they get that this Acoli woman means business.

There is no gender of washing clothes, but we have now made it female. And the female being has taken it off without question and this needs to change.

We need to have these difficult conversations.

Es gibt Menschen, die haben die Fähigkeit Dinge und Objekte in Müll zu verwandeln. Das ist recht einfach – der Verlust des Gebrauchswertes geschieht allein durch die Benennung. Das Etwas kann mir lieb und teuer gewesen sein, vielleicht habe ich es sogar auf der Haut gespürt, mich angeschmiegt, mich eingewickelt, vielleicht bin ich ihm entwachsen, vielleicht will ich meine Erinnerung nicht mehr mit ihm teilen – dann nenn ich es Müll.

Wer Müll sagt oder denkt, beendet die Beziehung. „Da steht der Eimer“, oder noch besser, „ab in den Rinnstein. Versiff doch.“ Vielleicht braucht der Trennungsschmerz den Ekel – den Starkregen, der die Tränen aus der Seidenbluse wäscht, den Hund, der auf deinen früheren Lieblingspullover pisst.
Mehr als Umweltverschmutzung ist nicht mehr drin für dich, Teil, gestehe deine Vergänglichkeit.

Müll ist drastisch und so ist auch seine Sprache: „Verrotte du alte Stinksocke.“ „Verwest in eurem eigenen Schweiß- Sweat Pants.“ „Sorry kennen wir uns – geh doch zurück nach Bangladesch, da wo du herkommst.“ – „Ach, war Kambodscha? Sorry again – dahin geht die Reise nicht, aber in die Subsahara – passt das auch? Schon mal da gewesen?“

Ich sage Müll und das Leben geht weiter.

 Um es mal kriminalistisch auszudrücken: Müll ist Mord – da geht nix mehr. Entwertung total.  Ab in die Pathologie – Textile Forensik kannst du noch betreiben bevor das Objekt zur Gänze  vermodert, und dich fragen, wer wohl diese Faser mit Olivenöl versehrt hat und damit den  Mohair Flaum zerstört, in welcher Kneipe noch Rothändel ohne Filter geraucht werden, und  ob die Spuren vom Lippenstift stammen oder bloß von Roter Beete – jedes Kleidungsstück  getränkt mit Stoffen, die vom Leben erzählen. Vom Menschen.

“Hey du – was hast du denn so an heute? Einen Wollpullover? Schlaf mal ein paar Wochen  darin – dann kannst du zwischen dem Kratzen der Wolle und der Krätze auf deiner Haut  nicht mehr unterscheiden.”

Haha. 

Zwischenbemerkung: Der Müll, die Stadt und derTod – Rainer Maria Fassbender 1975 – schon gehört davon?  

Ein bisschen weniger total als Mord ist der Totschlag und noch ein bisschen weniger, der ‘versuchte Totschlag‘. Die Totschläger:innen das sind die Messis – die sprechen nicht von  Müll, höchstens von Abfall, die sehn da immer noch was drin. Das sind die mit den  Trennungsängsten. Wenn die Messis, also die mit dem Abfallbegriff, kurz bevor sie ersticken  in dem Zeug, weil sie sich versehentlich mit ihrer geschichteten, in alle Ritzen gestopften Architektur aus Schaumstoff und Fetischkleidung der 80er Jahre jeder Frischluftzufuhr  beraubt haben, wenn die also eine Therapie hinter sich haben, dann sind die geläutert und  verbringen ihren Lebensabend als Recycler-, Upcyler-, oder Reuser:innen. Die Latexkleidung  wird zu Wärmflaschen verschweißt, stinckende Socken werden mit Schwarzpulver  angereichert und dienen als Ersatz für die längst verbotene Pyrotechnik an Sylvester und ja – „Geschenkbänder, Einkaufsbeutel, Wachstuch oder Kosmetikpad – du wirst überrascht sein,  was man aus alten T-Shirts alles zaubern kann!“

Das sind die Lebensretter:innen, die guten Samariter:innen: Was gefallen ist, wird  aufgehoben, gewaschen, gereinigt, gebügelt, gefaltet – heute nennt man das Circular  Economy

Ach so ja – die Untherapierbaren polieren nun wenigstens ihr Auto mit den Lappen, die sie  früher aus T-Shirts, Hosen und Pullovern zu Halden aufgeschüttet haben, um jeden Morgen  davor niederzuknien, um Eingebung zu flehen oder um vorübergehende Blindheit zu bitten  um der Hölle des ‘Ich hab nichts anzuziehen‘, zu entgehen.

Wer kennt nicht die verzweifelte Situation: Der Schrank lässt sich längst nicht mehr schließen, die geshoppte Beute quillt wie Lava aus seinem Inneren. Zwischen drei und fünf Uhr nachts auf die Straße gestellt, vielleicht noch von einem Quäntchen Hoffnung beseelt, eine andere Bewohner:in der Stadt käme mit dem Stauraum zwischen den Regalbrettern zurecht – aber nach zwei Wochen ist das Ding immer noch da, umgekippt, mit Müll gefüllt – aber daneben stehen ja Akkordeon, eine Flasche Wein…. Ich nähere mich – in dem Schrank schläft – ein Mensch.

Kein Grund zum Erschrecken: Wussten Sie, – kleine Abschweifung -, dass ‚privat‘ geraubt heißt? Wenn das alle wüssten, wäre das Zeitalter der Romantik endgültig vorbei. Dann wäre die Grenze aufgehoben zwischen privat und öffentlich, zwischen dem drinnen und dem draußen. Raubgut hat auf Dauer keinen Bestand – das muss, an wen auch immer – irgendwann zurückgegeben werden und vielleicht schlafen bald noch viel mehr Menschen in umgekippten Schränken und decken sich mit den Lappen zu, die sie einst auf der „schön-das-du-da-bist“- Plattform von Zalando & Co. erworben haben.

Die Lappen schweigen dazu und stinken.

Irgendwann wird die Stadt unbewohnbar sein – einige mochten diesen Moment wohl nicht abwarten und sind schon weg, haben sich erhoben, sind auferstanden aus dem Müll – zurück ließen sie unter anderem ihre Hosen -der Tunnelblick gleitet durch Röhrenbeine und reflektieren das Drama.  –

Mensch!

„Was eben gesagt wurde ist empörend (schon weil es Vorurteile angreift) und muss gerechtfertigt werden. Hier der Versuch, dies zu tun -: Die vorgeschlagene Dreiteilung der Menschenzeit in ältere Steinzeit, jüngere Steinzeit und unmittelbare Zukunft geht davon aus, dass wir drei Katastrophen im Verlauf unseres Hierseins feststellen können. Die erste kann Menschwerdung heißen, sie äußert sich (unter anderem und vor allem) als Benutzung von steineren Instrumenten. Die zweite Katastrophe kann Entstehung der Zivilisation heißen und äußert sich vor allem als leben in Dörfern. Die dritte hat noch keinen treffenden Name; sie äußert sich vor allem in der tatsache, dass die Welt ungewöhnlich wird, also unbewohnbar.“[1]

Im Kontext der Berlin Fashion Week forderte Berlins politischstes Mode-Label die Fast Fashion heraus, transformierte weggeworfene Textilien in prêt-à-porter und inszenierte soziale Plastik. Um mit Saved Items zur Bildung nachhaltiger Standards, fairer Produktionsketten und dekolonialisierter Lebensstilmuster beizutragen, veranstaltete STREETWARE den demonstrativen Catwalk der sozial-ökonomischen Utopie. Die präsentierten Fashion-Highlights stammten unmittelbar vom Asphalt der Straßen Berlins und dienten als provokanter Ausgangspunkt, um über Nachhaltigkeit, Produktionsweisen und soziale Praktik ins Gespräch zu kommen.

Neben Nachhaltigkeit, Produktionsweisen und sozialer Praktik wurde das Diktat der  Schönheitsideale frei interpretiert und   Ästhetiken zur Debatte gestellt. Die Kollektion von STRRETWARE wurde auf dem Tempelhofer Feld präsentiert von Models, die durch ihre einzigartige Ausstrahlung  Normbegriffe sprengten und demonstrierten, was Schönheit wirklich bedeutet

Marlene Sommer hat sich den BMI vorgenommen:

Overweight – over WHAT weight?

Overnight, half the American population became “overweight”, just bc someone changed the BMI borders … wtf?

 In today’s society, the so-called “body-mass-index” is like a status symbol, sth that defines your class, the amount of appreciation you receive. We don’t compare the price of our house or car, the job of our partner… we compare ourselves. 

When everything else feels out of control, there’s sth we can do – that’s what we think. But we can’t fight our biology. Even if we all ate and moved the same, we’d still all look different. The BMI was introduced in the 1830s by a mathematician, not a biologist so there ain’t much science behind it.

There’s a beauty standard, so many ppl try to archive by going against their biological needs. Is that really what we want: The same boring looks, so that no one can differentiate us? What once made us humane and separated us from robots is what we all strive for. Others claim, they just wanted to be “normal”; fit in. Right… who defines that? That’s society. And who is society? Us – you and me. Why are we creating a norm, only certain ppl can “archive”? You can’t fight your biology.

Why not establish our true authentic self as the new normal? Flaws and stretch marks, rolls, and muscles. Let’s celebrate what our bodies DO for us instead of hating “all your curves and edges, all [our] perfect imperfections” as John Legend says in his song “All of me”.

Why don’t we appreciate the fact that we all look different? Ain’t it amazing that we’re one species but still all so unique? 

Be yourself, everyone else already exists.

The BMI was once supposed to be a guideline, sth to express ppl’s health easily. We’re smarter today: Health ain’t only about your weight, it’s physical sanity, mental health and so much more. Health ain’t a visual diagnosis. A normal weight is the one your body feels most comfortable at; your setpoint is individual, not a matter of BMI numbers!

Our body is our home; our motor. We cannot cut the energy and expect electricity to still run. You can’t live a full life on an empty stomach. We need to start seeing our body as an instrument, not an ornament… it enables us to walk, laugh, write, talk, visit places. Don’t miss out on 95% of life only to weight 5% less

ein poetische Fragestellung und eine Hommage an die abgestreiften Textilien von NavaNaimaPan

Ich komme Nachhause. Öffne die Tür zu einem Zimmer, das seines war, heute meines ist.  In der Mitte steht ein Bett, ungemacht, so als hätte er letzte Nacht noch darin geträumt. Behutsam setzte ich mich auf die Bettkante. Es gehört mir noch nicht, Höflichkeit ist angebracht. Ich entdecke eine alte Holztruhe, öffne sie ohne Erwartung etwas darin zu finden, vielmehr mit dem Gedanken, ob und was ich hineinlegen könnte. Einrichten.

Der Geruch von ausgetragenen Turnschuhen und modrigen Klamotten steigt aus der Holzkiste, entblösst eine Jeansjacke. Ich ziehe sie hinaus, schüttele sie aus, als ob der Geruch so vom Stoff abfallen könnte, ziehe sie mir über. Sie ist zu gross.

Ich frage mich, wie die selbe Jacke über seine Schultern fällt.

Ich widme mich meinem Rucksack, packe die Kleider aus. Die gestreifte Hose mit Schlag. Heute gehört sie ihr und mir, wir teilen sie uns. Wem wohl davor?

Der Schal, der auf der Brücke im Wind hing. Wer trug ihn gegen die beissende Biese um den Hals geschlungen? Wer friert heute ohne das Tuch?

Der rote, samtige Pulli, den ich vor dem Haus, in dem ich damals wohnte, auf der Mauer fand.

Textile; Gewobenes, Gewirktes. Textile, die sich um Menschen webten, auf Menschen wirkten. Textile, die sich um Menschen weben, auf Menschen wirken.

hManche von Ihnen werden ein Zuhause. Ich denke dabei an den Fliegerhut eines verstorbenen Grossvaters. Ich trage ihn auf dem Kopf und der Hut mich durch den Winter.

Ich mag Hüte. Ein kleines Dach über dem Kopf. Ein Zuhause eben.

In neues Jeans gehüllt, trete ich auf die fremden Strassen hinaus. Menschen gehen sie auf und ab. Kleider und Leute; sie machen sich in Wechselwirkung.

Da, am Strassenrand liegt eine schmale Trainerjacke. Ich denke an eine junge Frau. Eine, die in Bangladesch zwischen dutzend anderen jungen Frauen drei weisse Streifen auf die blaue Stoffjacke aufnäht. An eine junge Frau, die nach dem Workout verschwitzt friert, sich dieselbe Jacke hier im Westen überzieht.

Ich bin als eine der Passant:innen weiter durch die Strassen geschlendert. Mich mit jedem Schritt weitergedacht, einmal ostwärts und wieder zurück.

Ich biege in eine kleinere Strasse ab, hab mich verloren, dabei fällt mein Blick auf drei aneinandergereihter Schuhpaare. Ich sehe darin Kinderfüsse, sie spielen aufgeregt durch den Trubel der Stadt.

Der Herbst bläst und färbt zwischen den Häusern, ich vergrabe mich im Blau der Jeansjacke und bilde mir ein, ihn leise spüren zu können. Ihn, der die Jacke vor mir trug. Fast ist es so, als gingen wir gemeinsam, we walk together. Do you wanna walk with us too?

Greetings from Uganda

100% silk, a flowing floral summer dress - only 50 cents and it's mine. In converted currency, of course. At Kalerwe market on the outskirts of Kampala, I pay two thousand Ugandan shillings. The trader laughs, then kisses the banknote. This,he euphorically announces to the crowd gathered around a pile of clothes, is the first earning of the day.After all, it is already 2.30 pm. I make my way to the centre of the market and, squeezing through the crowds of people, quickly settle on three T-shirts:

A light green Adidas shirt, a shirt that says 'Straight Outta Kindergarten' and another one, advertising for 'SeCla Gerüstbau' in embroidered lettering, including a German mobile phone number. The construction company's lettering stretches white on black across the entire back of the shirt. The seller insists that the Adidas shirt is worth 8000 shillings, i.e. 2 €, the other two change hands for 1.5 € each.

Made in Bulgaria, made in China, made in Honduras, made in Turkey.

Second-hand clothing gushes like a stream of lava over the city and surrounding countryside. Sellers queue up in front of somewhat inconspicuous looking warehouses, stacked to the top with 45 kg bales of clothing, waiting to receive their goods: 380 pieces each of women's outerwear, vacuum-packed, in a plastic bag.

They guarantee survival.

Since 2017, the government has been threatening to ban the import of second-hand clothing and has increased import duties. The 'Buy Uganda Build Uganda' campaign is designed to strengthen the local textile economy, the manufacturing sector as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. Its focus is on sustainability. Nevertheless, 95% of cotton continues to be shipped abroad. 'The quality of the second-hand products is better than what we can currently produce', explains the wholesaler in front of his vacuum-packed clothing castle, 'we can't even afford to think about quality'. This is a statement those that sell and those that buy unanimously agree on.

As of 8 June, Uganda has been in its second lockdown. It's been 42 days. The pandemic poses a twofold threat to people's lives: death from a Corona infection combined with rapidly deteriorating living conditions – where hunger and poverty eventually join forces.

When doing the laundry,a woman tells me that, she worries about how her family is actually going to survive..

Doing the laundry here means washing by hand. Electricity is not always available and certainly never a given. The second-hand clothes have been laid out to dry on the lawn.

The lives of the people in Bangladesh, Vietnam, China or elsewhere on this planet, who are sewing around the clock to guarantee the continuous supply of fast fashion and the lives of those – for example in Uganda – who wear the shed-off clothing of European consumers who conveniently order them in online shops only to get rid of them again, are put at risk – due to global economic interests and thoughtless consumers.

The nation’s tailors are sitting at their pedal-powered sewing machines made by Singer or are working in the dim light of their rooms. The machine is a real beauty: Black with golden lettering and curved ornaments – an inheritance of British colonialism: the colonial past has seamlessly carried over into our postcolonial modern society. The second-hand clothes flooding Uganda and their resulting socioeconomic consequences damage the country and its local textile industry and manufacturers – which, without electricity, will never be able to compete with the international textile industry.

barbara caveng is currently - June 7 until July 18 - in Uganda as a participant in the ifa 'artist contacts' programme. Her work encompasses the trade of second-hand textiles and the practice of textile care, as well as the production of clothing by local tailors and designers.

 Wieviel Kleidung braucht der Mensch?

In Deutschand besitzt ein Mensch durchschnittlich 95 Kleidungsstücke. Die Zahl resultiert aus einer Online-Befragung von Greenpeace aus dem Jahr 2015, an der sich mehr als 1000 Personen beteiligten. Es dürften nicht weniger geworden sein. Im Rahmen einer Schulprojektwoche von STREETWARE im vergangenen Jahr
zählten Schüler:innen der Willkommensklasse I der Otto-Hahn-Schule Neukölln ihre Kleidungsstücke. Die Untersuchung brachte erstaunliches aus dem Schrankinneren ans Tageslicht: Nicht nur die Anzahl der Kleidungsstücke überraschte zuweilen, sondern auch die Herstellungsländer, die keine Schlüsse über den Standort der Garderobe zuließen: Ginge es nach den Etiketten müssten die Kleiderschränke und Kommoden in Asien stehen.
